Blackberry bloom

The blackberry is coming on just as the Scotch broom is fading. Maybe, when they’re finished, it will be safe to go off OTC allergy meds until next spring. Maybe.

The blackberry problem in the Pacific Northwest defies just about any other pernicious plant problem I’m aware of–except maybe kudzu in the southeast. It gives one a special understanding of Little Shop of Horrors. Any piece of land untended for a year will have become an impenetrable thicket.

  1. But it makes wonderful jam – Peter picked 22 lbs. the year before last – made enough jam to last two years. And the raspberry canes are looking good this year too. The jelly I made from them was so full of flavor I just needed a scraping on toast, which helps when you have diabetes.
